Doctors Interpersonal Skills Questionnaire DISQ
Thousands of general practitioners, GP registrars, nurses and other health
professionals have benefited from the information provided by their
Interpersonal Skills Questionnaire ISQ results. DISQ has been used and trusted for nearly a decade by UK
clinicians who want clear patient views. It is deemed flexible
enough to be used in a variety of professional contexts - hospitals
as well as general practices. DISQ has also been used by health
professionals who work in the community.
More recently, DISQ has been recognised by Deaneries as an
important learning tool for registrars.
DISQ is a fully validated patient tool. It is designed to give
health professionals feedback on their interpersonal skills during
consultation.
It contains just 13 items and takes around 2 minutes for patients to
complete.
The NHS Appraisal Toolkit recommends DISQ for the use of getting patient feedback on the services that practitioners provide, including finding out patients' views and can also be used to get feedback on practitioners' consulting skills. The DISQ report can be uploaded into the NHS Appraisal toolkit for GP appraisals.
Based on the Doctor’s Interpersonal Skills Questionnaire, the ISQ is a survey suitable for the
interaction between nurses or nurse practitioners and their patients.
DISQ questionnaires can be given to patients by receptionists,
administration staff or clinicians themselves. The questionnaire is
accompanied by a sealable envelope so that patients can be confident
that they are being asked anonymously. Return is usually by ballot
box on site – although other modes of collection can be easily
arranged.
We generally require 24 completed questionnaires per clinician.
We provide a report exclusively and confidentially to clinicians.
It includes all written comments, summary tables (with demographics)
and graphs. Results also contain benchmark scores from other
clinicians. Support material to help with understanding and acting
on these results is included.
Results can be used by GPs and other doctors as part of the
appraisal process.
